Invited Program
A slate of invited speakers from a broad range of disciplines and perspectives will present on the topic: contextualizing emotional development. Specifically, their research will highlight how emotions and their development can be better contextualized by considering the influences of evolutionary adaptiveness, societal structure, cultural and cross-cultural norms, race and bias, and temporal dynamics of interpersonal interactions.
Thus, the audience will consider (among other questions):
-
From an evolutionary perspective, what adaptive functions do emotions afford?
-
How does society influence how emotions are emphasized, socialized, and passed on to future generations?
-
How does culture, acculturation, and race impact the development of emotion at the individual and group level?
-
How do moment-to-moment emotion dynamics impact long-term outcomes?
Taken together, this program will push the boundaries of how researchers contextualize development, consider how various contexts interact with one another, and stimulate discussion and collaboration to integrate research across disciplines.
